Growing up in Malaysia, It was impossible to get hold of comics but as my father was in the US in the late 90s, I was able to obtain a random collection, however, most of which just weren’t great. Regardless, I’ve often wanted to read the sort of revolutionary cartoons that emerged throughout the counter culture circles in the UK and the US between the 60s and 80s.
Two of the most influential figures that I looked up too in my twenties to present, are Alan Moore and Stewart Lee. I hadn’t known in my early years of discovering them that they both were good friends and moved in the same circles. Stewart Lee interviewed Alan Moore to promote his Moore’s new book Illuminations where they discussed aspects of discovering comics in their childhood.

Towards the end of the week, unwitting, I chose a film at random to put on in the background as I potted about and it just happened to be Terry Zwigoff’s documentary film, Crumb on Robert Crumb, whom, up until I watched the film, had no idea who he was. Regardless of how his work has aged or what you make of them, the film itself is an extraordinary artifact of documenting incredibly twisted yet remarkable people.
Thus ended a week book-ended by old men of comic counter culture.
