The Earth is far more alive than previously thought, according to “deep life” studies that reveal a rich ecosystem beneath our feet that is almost twice the size of all the world’s oceans. The Guardian

One of the most important lessons I learnt is when I impertinently told my teacher that I smoke and would like to go out to his garden. He unexpectedly handed me a torch-light at dusk and naturally I retorted that I can navigate his garden without a torch surely! To which I was rebuked, “I don’t want you to tread on the snails!”

A thunderous rebuke over a trivial conversation that has continued to reverberate yet coalesce even today, nearly nine years later.

We must ask ourselves: if life on Earth can be this different from what experience has led us to expect, then what strangeness might await as we probe for life on other worlds?” – Robert Hazen
